Cheviot sheep are a hardy, dual-purpose breed primarily raised for both meat and wool. They originated from the Cheviot Hills, a range of rolling hills that straddle the border between England and Scotland. The breed is well adapted to the rugged, hilly landscapes of the UK and Ireland, thriving in areas with challenging weather conditions.

Characteristics of Cheviot Sheep
They are medium-sized sheep with distinctive white faces, ears that stand upright, and a wool-free head and legs. Known for their resilience, they can thrive in cold and wet climates, making them well-suited to the uplands of Scotland, Northern England, and parts of Ireland.

Cheviot Wool: Qualities and Uses
Cheviot wool is prized for its springiness, resilience, and durability, making it different from softer wools like Merino.
It’s more coarse than fine Merino but softer than some traditional British longwools. Crisp, bouncy, and slightly wiry, with a good crimp that provides elasticity.

Uses:
– Ideal for hard-wearing garments like socks, outerwear, and tweeds.
– Popular for carpets and upholstery due to its durability.
– Excellent for felting and needle felting, though not as fine as softer wools.

Cheviot Wool in Ireland
While not as dominant as in Scotland, Cheviot sheep are present in upland areas, particularly in counties such as Wicklow, Kerry, and Donegal, where they are raised for both wool and meat.

Modern Uses and Demand
In recent years, while softer wools have gained popularity in hand-knitting and luxury textiles, Cheviot wool is still valued by spinners, weavers, and felt-makers for its resilience and structure. It’s an excellent choice for projects requiring elasticity and strength.
