Corriedale Sheep and Their Wool
Corriedale sheep are a dual-purpose breed raised for both meat and wool, known for their soft, versatile fleece. They originated in New Zealand in the late 19th century from a cross between Merino and Lincoln sheep, combining the softness of Merino with the long staple length of Lincoln wool. Today, Corriedales are found worldwide, including in the UK and Ireland.
Characteristics of Corriedale Sheep
Medium to large-sized sheep with a broad face, often with a woolly topknot and a white, clean face.
Adaptable to various climates, thriving in both lowland and upland regions.
Corriedale Wool: Qualities and Uses
Corriedale wool is softer and finer than many British wool types, making it highly desirable for both commercial and hand-spinning purposes.
Micron Count:
25–30 microns, placing it between Merino and Cheviot—fine enough for next-to-skin garments but durable enough for outerwear.
Texture:
Soft, strong, with good crimp and elasticity, making it ideal for garments that need to hold their shape.
Uses:
Hand-knitting and weaving: Often used in sweaters, scarves, and shawls.
Felting: A great wool for both wet and needle felting due to its fine crimp.
Blending: Frequently blended with silk, alpaca, or other fibres to create luxurious yarns.
Dyeing: Corriedale wool takes dyes beautifully, producing vibrant, even colours.
Corriedale Wool in Ireland
New Zealand and Australia remain the largest producers, but Corriedale sheep have been introduced to the UK and Ireland, where they are mainly found in small flocks, artisan farms, and speciality wool producers.
Modern Uses and Demand
Corriedale wool is highly sought after by hand-spinners, indie dyers, and sustainable textile brands looking for an alternative to Merino. It provides softness without the delicacy, making it an excellent choice for garments that need both comfort and durability.
